Meet and greet – Gonçalo Catarino

February 2, 2012

Last month I started the Meet and Greet feature on the blog, to show the work of interesting and creative people I either know or that have captured my fancy. This month is Gonçalo Catarino’s turn, a friend who is also a talented photographer. I’ve known Gonçalo for a few years and posed for his photos just for fun and his work just keeps getting better and better!

So, without further ado, here are a few questions I asked him.

Do you remember the exact moment or image that raised your interest in photography? That moment you see something and think “this is what I want to do”…

I do not think there was a moment or image itself. But since childhood, I think I have the memories of the different phases of my life, organized by images in my head and it was in photography that I found the best way to materialize memories, feelings and ideas that I have.

yours truly 😉

What are your biggest inspirations?

Music, movies and the different life situations.

Who are your favorite photographers?

This answer could be quite long, but the first that come to mind are: Greg Kadel, Hedi Slimane, Solve Sundsbo, Melissa Rodwell, Mario Testino and Mario Príncipe.

Which was the set that was the most pleasurable to execute?

The “Future Perfect”, the theme itself and the whole team involved helped me get the images I had imagined during the planning phase.

Getting to transpose an image (either in any form, photography, painting, drawing, etc.), I think is one of the main challenges that any creative person can face. And I feel that this editorial was the one where the result was closer to what was imagined.

What would be your dream project?

Developing an editorial, with all possible production (top models, styling, makeup, hair, props, lighting) and appropriate landscape, inspired by the oriental imagery of several films of which I am a fan.

Do you have any project in mind for the near future?

Several 🙂 but the one that is more advanced in terms of planning, will be a set of photographs with a more intimate and romantic mood.

And at last, when are you coming here to take a few more snaps?

In the last two years, I only left Lisbon (not for work) for 2 or 3 week-ends … time and money are two major constraints :

And just to finish, one of my favourite photos Gonçalo took of me, in 2010. I’m lucky to have friends who take nice photos!
