The most beautiful thing ever.

May 28, 2012
Remember a few weeks ago I posted an interview with my dear friend Maud Van Den Broecke and her great talent? This is a follow up post that I’ve been meaning to show for a while. Last time I went to London we met briefly as I had commissioned her to make me a detachable collar. I didn’t see it straight away as we saw each other on the street and it was raining a little here and there, so I just brought it home.
The next day I opened it and it felt like Christmas. Not only the package she made for me was very sweet, but the collar was everything that I expected and some more!
The colours are beautiful and it is made out of the softest suede, with little tassels on the ties which are absolutely adorable. Holding such an object, so carefully hand crafted did make me think about how much better it is than mass (and mostly badly) produced stuff. One might sometimes complain how expensive a pair of Louboutins for example is but there is a reason for that price tag. Using good materials, sourced from ethical sources costs money and the time and care put into each piece is also costly, not to mention the craftsmanship – skills like these are not acquired overnight.

I still think that some designer pieces are not worth the price, but something like this certainly is. It’s got nothing to do with luxury and branded goods but a matter of appreciation for quality. I just don’t agree with certain things costing a third of my paycheck just because there is a logo on it (like t-shirts and the such) but I can understand and appreciate that a handmade dress or a pair of shoes can cost more than what you can buy on the High Street. Plus, it is helping small businesses and sometimes even your local economy, rather than some brand that has their goods made in a sweat shop. I am guilty of buying from fast fashion shops as much as the next guy (or gal, for that matter) but it’s something like to avoid.

What are your thoughts on this issue?

Here I am, happily wearing it. I shall cherish this collar for a long time and hope to wear it a lot too!
I took these photos a couple of weeks ago or so… Sad that my pink hair is gone (for now, at least). Ha well…

Happy Monday everyone!

Very nice piece. It's good that it's reversible too.

I loved your pink hair and am in love with that collar, the quality and design speak for themselves. I completely agree, some things are so beautifully made that they justify the price tag, they'll last for years and only get better. x

I love that collar! And the package is so sweet too. There's no escaping the price/quality factor – you must pay more for things that are unique and time intensiveness to make, and these things shine in the finished product. I do not pay full price or get satisfaction from wearing a big name brand.

What a adorable collar and love that it is reversible.
    So well made.
    Your pink hair is fabuloso.
I'm not into namebrands or paying full price either.

Oh I love this collar so much and yes to reversibility:)). I will never pay full price on mass produced brands and really I'd much rather support a local business or opp shops – yay for Maud and your pink hair! x
