Key West – Cocks and pussies + what I wore

June 22, 2012

? Some more travel photos of Key West.

The city is full of feral chickens and roosters and they’re all over the place. In some places (like Lisbon, for example) it’s the pigeons who are a plague but here it’s the chickens! Some people love them, other people would like to see them banned. I personally thought they added a nice touch to the city.
I was curious about the bird’s origins so I googled it:

“Though it is thought that these birds have been in Key West for over 175 years, their numbers certainly grew in the 1950s, when thousands of Cubans fled the Revolution and came to Key West to support a booming cigar industry. These Cubans brought their chickens with them. The birds were used for meat and eggs, but the roosters were especially prized for their beauty and prowess for cockfighting. Over time, many birds escaped their enclosures, or were “released” by owners no longer interested in maintaining chickens once eggs and poultry became readily available in local markets. With few predators on the island (except hawks and feral cats) the “wild” chickens thrived on a diet of native insects and lizards. Several generations later, these birds still roam freely throughout the island.”

We also visited one of the main Key West attractions: Ernest Hemingway’s Home.

The house is full of cats everywhere! They don’t really care about the visitors or any cuddles we may have for them – they probably have too much of it!

The house is really nice and filled with interesting objects but the cats are for sure one of the main attractions.

You can’t take a step without stumbling on a sleeping cat! One can’t really blame them as it was so hot that all they can do is sleep in the shade.

The house has had so many cats there is a cemetery in a small section of the garden. Sad but still sweet, as you can see it has been lovingly built.

The cats over at Hemingway’s Home are special for one particular reason: Some of them are six toed. That’s quite unusual!

This is what I wore on that day:

Dress: H&M
Bag – Internaçionale
Shoes – Bershka
Camera – Baby Holga

I have a few more photos of the streets and architecture of Key West but I’ll leave that for another post, as this one is already a little too long!

I love this, all those gorgeous kitties in such a wonderful setting. I remember reading that Hemingway loved his cats which made me like him all the more! x

Fabulous post. I love your outfit and all the kitty pictures. Polydactyl cats are quite common in Nova Scotia. My friends have a cat with 7 toes on each of his front paws. I think they are compensating for not having thumbs.

All those tiles remind me of Lisbon!
