Under the sea

August 18, 2012

One of the things I miss from when I was a kid holidaying with the family in the Algarve, is swimming freely in the ocean. You see, my Mum’s partner and his son did scuba diving, so would take the boat out to secluded bays, away from the confusion of the tourist packed beaches, throw the anchor overboard and spend the whole day in the sun and swim around the boat. I had my own snorkel, fins and a life jacket, just in case, as I was quite young (9 or 10). Even though I didn’t quite dive (the life jacket wouldn’t let me and neither would my Mum), it was great to swim among the fish that were to be found in the shallow parts of the bays. As it wasn’t too deep I could see the bottom quite clearly and I have fond memories of swimming with my Mum and seeing all these things up close.

Maybe because of these memories the Lisbon Oceanarium is one of my favourite places to visit. Every time I go there I just feel like stripping and jumping in the enormous tanks despite the presence of sharks, sting rays and other sea creatures bigger than me (that would probably enjoy the snack). As they don’t allow naked women on there I have to content myself with sitting in the darkness and observe the animals go about their business as they would if they were out in the sea. It is beautiful and if you manage to experience these rare moments of silence (there’s always a few visitor’s here and there) it is extremely relaxing. Sometimes I could just sit there gazing at the water for hours.

I took these photos the last time I was there in 2010, with Mr D. I fooled around with them for a bit on Pixlr-o-matic to illustrate this post, as this now brings me to the reason why all of this was mentioned: my sea bottom/coral reef dress. While clearly inspired by the designs of Mary Katrantzou, it is not exactly a copy and manages to look really good. It is certainly one of my favourite dresses from this Summer and I wish I could wear it more often, if the weather allowed. The following photos were taken in Florida by Mr D.

Dress: Primark
Watch : Casio
Ballerinas : Bershka (now deceased, but worry not, I have a backup pair from Zara as they’re one of my favourite flats ever!)

What is your favourite dress from this Summer?

Those amazing photos are the perfect lead-in to your gorgeous dress. Wowza!! What wonderful memories out there on the sea with your family. I was in a harbor today on Vancouver Island BC. There were so many beautiful seacrafts from small modest boats to large yachts. It was fun to imagine living life on the water like that. You're very lucky to have memories like these.

And thank you for your offer to mention some of my work. I'd be thrilled! When you see me wearing one of my shirts then you'll know I'm up and running. For now I just have a few samples here and there. But I have over 70 art prints in my shop. 😉 I just need to get them to the fabric by Christmas.

I love this wacky fishes eye view. Wow! You look cute as always. My favorite summer dress is a blue and white striped dish towel dress that I wear so much that it has turned into a uniform!

Your dress is perfect for Florida!! I love the preamble of pictures, too. Favorite summer dress? Sadly, my favorite vintage Hawai'ian dress won't zip up the back until I return to a former size.

After stumbling on your post about Catherine Baba, I could care less about summer!! I feel downright pedestrian after seeing her. Time to up the ante.

When I got up this morning and saw that there were comments on older posts, I was sure it was the dreaded spambots. How wonderful to see it was you. Thank you!

Oh your frock is completely glorious and I can see why it takes you back to happy days snorkelling in the warm sea. It's like being in another world isn't it? Time flies when you're in the water. xoxo
