James Roy Illustration

September 10, 2012

A mutual friend told me about James’ work and that we should have a chat, as he would like to break into the illustration/ comic industry and work professionally as an illustrator. As I have some experience on the matter (although no longer do it professionally), an idea and sugestion exchange was in order. We had a fruitful conversation by email and I suggested we could show his work on my page. James was happy about that idea and sent me a short bio and a few images. You can click here for James’s DeviantArt page and here for a Manga Magazine feature . Hope you enjoy it!

James is a British Freelance Artist who graduated from the University of Lincoln in 2009 with a BA(hons) in Animation, where he learnt that his true passion lay in concept work and still images rather than motion. Since 2010, James has been working on his webcomic, ‘Gravston’, which has been met with success and praise. He hopes to one day get it published in print form. James’ artistic influences range from the obvious – such as the works of Hiromu Arakawa and Tim Burton – to the less obvious – such as the cartoons of Matt Groening and the animation of Bird Brad.

The artist shows a broad range of abilities. I love the top one especially. The bold color against the black and the contrast between the sketchy symbol above and the more precision drawn illustration below is very appealing. I'm on my way to check out more of his work!

Very impressive. I like the final image the best. It's a real metaphor for life.

Interesting images. I think the black and white illustration with the ship and the last image are my favourites. xx
