The week in photos.

November 11, 2012

As it is now dark when I leave the office and I haven’t been taking many photos on Instagram for that reason, I saved the second part of NYC’s instagram piccies for today. The good ones from my camera I will continue sharing over the next couple of weeks.

So after Sandy hit the city, I left the house after a couple of days to go and see what was going on. Thankfully there wasn’t much devastation around the Bushwick area (Brooklyn) as it wasn’t flooded and the houses were still pretty much intact. I was on my own by this time as Mr D had gone back to Florida.
Unlike the pack cigarettes, the American spirit wasn’t crushed and people tried to go back to normal as much as possible.
Evie, the very cute cat of the house where I was staying. Boy, is she big!
The sun!
Some sweets and stuff I picked up.
Breakfast
As the subway was flooded and I was stranded in Brooklyn, my friends found me a hotel room and I took a car ride into Manhattan. That’s the Brooklyn bridge, which we crossed.
Old iron structure bridge.
Some exists were blocked, as the Downtown area had been affected and didn’t have power for days after the hurricane.
Goodbye Brooklyn
NYC cops and the Empire State building in the distance.
As I arrived, I had a comfortable room at the Belleclaire Hotel on 77th and Broadway, waiting for me.
I spent an evening at the Opera. Before the show started I was wandering about looking at things and taking photos. The painting you see in this one is a portrait of tenor Placido Domingo by Julian Schnabel.
There was a wall covered in photos of several singers that have performed at the Met Opera.
Portrait of Rosa Ponselle
That night I saw a performance of Shakespeare’s the Tempest
Opera goers.
The chandeliers look like giant snowflakes.
During intermission I went backstage.
Costume jewelry on display
A beautiful portrait of Joan Sutherland
A sneaky photo of the finale.
I liked the graphic identity (and the food) at American Table.
Lovely colours at the farmers market.
A decadent chopine style shoe at D&G’s window, Madison Avenue.
Taken for inspiration.
I saw another show, this time the War Horse. I really liked it and the puppeteering was fantastic, I had never seen anything like it before.
I can get behind that.
Some trinkets and shiny things at the Off Broadway shop.
At the Urban Outfitters fitting room.
To be added to the Christmas wishlist
Unicorn girl
A dress from Reiss that I fell in love with, just not with the price.
My first ever slice of pumpkin pie. Delicious, I must say. No wonder it’s Mr D’s favourite!
On this yummy last note we come to the end of the instagram photos of my trip. If you want to follow me there don’t forget, it’s @hellothemushroom
I would like to thank my friends for making the last couple of days in the city a good experience. With the subway flooded I would have been stranded in Brooklyn for the rest of the week and that would have been beyond boring. I can’t complain really, I got to see the husband for a couple of days (better than nothing, right?) and came out of the hurricane unscathed, some people were not as fortunate.
I would also like to say hello to the new followers, some might have come by the hand of Sara at The Good the Bad and the Ugly who was kind enough to write up a post about me, that can be seen here. Thank you Sara, you are very kind!
I hope the weekend is fantastic and have a lovely week!

What timing to be in NY just as Sandy struck. Doesn't the sky look menacing?
Glad you stayed safe and enjoyed some quality time with your bloke. That cat is adorable, I'd love to snuggle up with her on a cold night! x

First of all, your photos are really, really beautiful, evocative and sometimes haunting. I love them. I was moved by the shots of NY. My daughter lived in Bushwick for quite awhile when she was in school. She actually just left NY in August. I would visit her periodically and stay with her. I'm glad you're okay and appreciate your “documentary”.

On a fashion note, I can TOTALLY see you in that dress!! Lastly, if you think pumpkin pie is good (which it is) try sweet potato pie the next time!! OMG.
