Something’s bugging me…

January 3, 2014

It’s become increasingly clear that with the proliferation of new platforms, no person or company can become the master of them all. Nor should they. The harder decision is figuring out which ones you should prioritize — or jettison.

I read this article at the Harvard Business Review blog and it made me wonder about all this social media/ blog etc. Sometimes I feel like I am spreading myself too thin – I barely have the energy to come up with posts some days, and having to keep up not only with the blog but also maintain the relationships developed over the time (which I love, by the way) and also be on top of Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram and Facebook and have a life offline, can sometimes be a little bit daunting. I really want to know other people’s views on this. How do you do it? which ones are your favourites?

Hello doll 🙂 Happy New Year! (can’t remember if I said it already, my mind is already crammed. I think a lot of the pages that I have for social media, I will end up getting rid of really. I have like fashiolista & I used it a lot at first, now it’s just a page and I never use it. I’ve found that my twitter, pinterest and facebook are the places most reach me at & if not they email me. I know social media ‘gurus’ say having a lot of them is best, but I can’t really agree. I’ve worn myself thin with some of them and for what?? No interaction on them and they’ve become boring. So, I would chose the ones that give you the most interaction or the ones people like. I like twitter and facebook & pinterest really. Oooh..and instagram. I hope you have a the best year ever doll xx

It just gets too much sometimes. I don’t agree that we should be on all of them – we should pick the one’s we like or are good at and do an excellent job on them, instead of doing a poor job on all of them…

Hi Sara, I know what you are talking about – I guess it depends what your goals are in terms of blogging –
It can be overwhelming at time – Following blogs and replying is time consuming, so i can imagine the amount of time you have to dedicate to all other form of communication, but i guess like i said, it depends what you want to do with your blog – Are you doing it for fun, to make friends, to meet new people, develop relationships or do you eventually want to be a professional blogger and earn a living via it?

I do it for fun and follow and comment regurlarly on the blogs i like and if it gets me a freebie or 2 at times, i don’t mind it and think it’s great – But what i like must of all is the people you meet via blogging –
Facebook is ok for me, Instagram i like but didn’t use it for a while, i should get back to it cause i liked it –
But for the rest as far as i’ m concern it’s not worth it for me, I can’t bother, it’s a waste of time – i prefer to spend my time in the real life – There are so, so many blogs that i feel i’m a drop in the ocean of blogging and don’t intend to be the next star of the bloggersphere –

    Have a great year Sara!

    Hugs

I know what you mean, and I don’t really see the point in being “obligated” to appear in social media all the time, unless you are really trying to build a brand or a presence as your career. I appreciate the relationships that are built through blogging, but I don’t need to see new blog posts every day. It wears me out!

I sort of flow from one to the other organically at this point… I just do them based on my level of interest on any given day at any given moment.

I didn’t get a chance to respond to this right away because every couple of days I take a day off. No technology. Nothing. It helps to clear my mind a little. Just as I Love my local friends, I wouldn’t really like to have them hanging around my home all the time. I feel I also need to take a break from my online friends, which are just as dear to me as the friends down the street. I think you are an amazingly talented blogger. Really a Star. If you concentrated your efforts there, I for one, would be delighted. I don’t have the time for twitter. It makes me feel insane. It just keeps coming and coming. Augh! And I’ve never had a face book page. I like snail mail and phone calls way too much. Maybe because I’m older. Never feel afraid to step back for awhile if you need to. We’ll all still be here for you. I am a devoted fan of Sara!

I can totally relate! There is simply too much out there and I don’t have the time to do it all. I don’t even like to do it all. From all the social media out there Pinterest is my favorite and it’s also my nr 1 traffic source when it comes to social media. Not surprisingly so as I love this one the most. At some point I wanted to delete my twitter account but somebody talked me out of it. There’s this pressure that you need to be on all social media but I don’t like most of them lol

Somebody once told me that you need to focus on 2-3 platforms and with so many social media out there I think that is the best solution to make the most of it

Look at what you love the most and put more love and effort there. I always try new platforms to see if I like it but if it doesn’t work I leave it at that

I think your language is saying it all, Sara. Spread too thin, barely have the energy, having to keep up, being on top, a little bit daunting… I’m not sure that these sound like descriptors of activities you truly love, but rather reflect a pressure and an expectation, whether your own or that of others.
Ariane is right – it all depends what you are doing it all FOR. If you want to further your career through social media, then I guess you have to view it as necessary, another part of your job spec. If it’s supposed to be fun, and it isn’t, then stop! The world doesn’t end because someone isn’t on Twitter or Instagram! Most of it is thoroughly inane and self-absorbed, as far as I can see. Facebook is OK, though I don’t feel the need to be on it all the time, I just drop in now and then. I feel differently about blogging, because a blog is so much more personal and individual and extended. There are real relationships going on there, and you control the content, and can make your blog exactly what you want it to be.
Just my opinions, of course, we are all different. xxxxx

I can understand how do you feel about spreading yourself too thin, because there’re too many social media to attend and feed with contents, it becomes overwhelming!, I really like blogging because of the interaction, but I’m also using facebook as an accessory to my blog, sharing little things through my telephone, staying in touch.

    Yes.
I think about giving up blogging all the time for this reason. I’m just not super awesome at it, so I often think that I should spend time doing some things I’m better at.
I broke my phone weeks ago and I haven’t replaced it. I’m withdrawing from the internet more and more. Well, except to pop in on people I care about now and then, like you!
