Beat the January blues

January 17, 2014

January has to be one of the worst months in the calendar. The post Christmas depression with all the lights and colour (and the money) gone, is just dreadful. I made a list of nice things that help me go through it. I hope you like it!

  • Book a holiday somewhere sunny (going to Morocco did wonders for my SAD).
  • Organize a clothes swap with friends/ bloggers. It’s so much fun and will leave your bank account alone after all the Xmas spending.
  • Start the year with a whole new wardrobe by organizing and streamlining it.
  • Do some DIY. Nothing like making something with your own hands for a nice sense of accomplishment. Also valid for finishing those projects you’ve left unfinished all those months ago. (check out my bejeweled jumper and my studded denim jacket for some inspiration)
  • Wear something colourful.
  • Quit drinking for the month of January. I joined Dryathlon, to raise money for Cancer Research. Please donate generously on my donation page here.
  • Go out for a walk for a bit of fresh air and some exercise. Bonus points if you take your camera and snap up anything that catches your eye.
  • Organize a Twister party at home.
  • Take up embroidery – it has a surprisingly calming effect.

How about you? what are your tricks? I want to hear all about them!

These are super ideas…have been trying to wear brighter colours and so far it helps and I’ve been watching movies I’ve never seen as well. I wish I could go away for a holiday somewhere warm, it would be marvellous. My husband won a trip to Rio from work for three days, but he has to go with a group from work, so I’m stuck in cold Scotland, hahaha. But, it’s ok. I know it will be warm again soon. I hope you have a great weekend doll xx

These are all good ideas! I get down in the dark parts of winter, too. Light helps me πŸ™‚

thank you! SAD is not life threatening but it really is a pain in the arse!

We’re having a really horrible January so far – freezing fog and air stagnation for days and days on end. I need that spicy Mexican cocoa!

I did do some wardrobe organization, and tomorrow I’ll get into my craft cave and started making things. I might also paint my fingernails a bright color for a little pick-me-up!

Tks for the picker upper, I particularly like the link for Vintage movies –
We would normally take off down south for a week but we have the wedding and honeymoon to think of this year!

    Have a great weekend

It’s getting cold here as well. No snow yet though. Let’s see where this goes πŸ™‚

I know, January sucks! Our finances don’t run to a sunny holiday sadly, so I’ll have to try the other tips to beat the winter blues. Can’t do the Dryathlon though – never mind the light, I need my wine! xxxx

Haha, I know what you mean, the wine should have been part of the list too πŸ˜€

Those are some good suggestions – I’ve been trying to wear more colour (I even purchased a hot pink winter coat) and are doing some serious clearout of my wardrobe. No money for a holiday to somewhere warm so will just have to make the best of it until the cold and snow go away. It’s good movie-watching weather.

      Thank you πŸ™‚
Wearing colour is great and makes you feel cheerful automatically, which is fantastic!

oh yes, January is being really dull and I’m fighting some kind of sadness and lack of inspiration too, and your ideas look very inspiring to me!, I’m decluttering my wardrobe, revamping clothes and crocheting!, and if anything works, I would have my hair cut!, that usually cheers me up!

These months can be really difficult- I’ve discovered recently that I have SAD and it doesn’t help either.
I hope your crocheting helps while away this time of the year πŸ™‚

Old movies!! That’s the greatest. Isn’t it? I love getting style ideas from the 50’s and 60’s.

    • Reply Mrs D January 20, 2014 at 09:11

Same here! I always drool at 60’s movies – I always get fascinated by the clothes!

I’ve lived through a few UK winters (and survived!) and completely understand the need to find things that can bring some joy into ones life during the worst of the cold months. I love the idea of a clothes swap, a good opportunity to cozy up with some hot drinks and delicious snacks and score some lovely new wardrobe additions! xoxoxo

    • Reply Mrs D January 20, 2014 at 09:12

It’s an essential necessity as days here can b really dull in the Winter. πŸ™‚

      Good idea!

I love the idea of a clothes swap. A stylish neighbor passed on some of her handmedowns, including two amazing new vintage inspired dresses- cut on the bias so they are so comfy yet figure flattering. Totally brightened up my week!

      That’s lovely!
I wish I could attend events like this a lot more πŸ™‚
