I rarely buy crafts magazines these days, because much like Pinterest, I think ‘that is amazing, I need to make it’ and that’s pretty much it. Recently I came across these two magazines in the supermarket and they caught my eye. I have seen Molly Makes before but I don’t really buy it because the projects are cool but most of them I’m not too interested in making. However this clothes DIY special edition sounded a lot more interesting. . The other one, Daphne’s Diary is brand new and I was curious to see what it was all about, so I brought them both home.
Molly Makes – DIY Fashion special edition
I loved this magazine. I just did. It’s colourful, it has the right amount of retro inspired articles and it features a few bloggers and other creatives. The clothes style is quirky and the project ideas are simple and easy to make. I really like the design as it is simple and makes the colourful photos really pop out.
Daphne’s Diary – a magazine full of inspiration and style
The contents of this magazine are a lot broader and go from gardening, recipes, interior design, some DIY, all with a vintage shabby chic vibe. Some articles are really interesting – like the one on Bucovina Easter eggs, I own a few that I brought back from Romania years ago and I was pleasedto read a bit more about them. I like the variety in the magazine and its style, although I find the design too busy, too many twee cutesy items decorating borders that really didn’t need to be there.
Do you usually buy crafts magazines? If you do, what would you recommend?

I am the least crafty person in the world, so no, the world of crafting magazines is not for me! It always strikes me that there are plenty of suggestions for projects out there on blogs and websites, so I wouldn’t ever spend money on magazines, especially if they have that twee chintzy vibe you mentioned.

I got a subscription to Mollie Makes for Christmas. So far I have been a little bit disappointed as I want more of a ‘read’ from a magazine. I find I can have looked through it in around ten minutes! However I guess if you use it more as an activity guide and actually do the craft projects then it’s probably worth the £4.99 price tag 🙂

The craft magazines I’ve seen when I’ve been killing time waiting for Jon to finish perusing the classic car mags in WH Smith never inspire me – too twee for me.
The Works often has some amazing arty books for a lot less. I tend to make things up as I go along or use tutorials I’ve seen on blogs. xxxx
Well, craft magazines have come a long way since I was little – as I used to sit and look at them at my Nana’s house or my Auntie’s house. These are really great. Love the second one. The Twinkie Chan that they featured is marvellous, I love her shop :)) I use pinterest as well to find DIY stuff to do, I love it. I have a mass of ideas I need to get started on actually. I buy craft magazines from time to time, but they’re so expensive and it’s easy to find things online instead. There’s a company in the US that makes beautiful craft magazines of all sorts – Stampington. All their magazines are gorgeous, and they have specialty magazines for dolls, handbags, jewelry, altered couture, cooking, aprons, decorating, paper, and more!. I’m getting the urge to go buy one now that I’m thinking about it!
