As we are bracing ourselves for Winter, I am putting together a list of my tips to staying warm in this cold, cold season. As I’ve mentioned before, it’s been a learning process, adapting to the cold temperatures in the UK and I’ve learned a few things in these last 4 years. There is nothing worse than having to leave the house and find that you’re not wearing the appropriate clothes.
1- Layer layer layer – a few thinner layers are better than just one thick jumper, as you can put on or remove them as the temperatures vary, particularly when you have to go inside.
2- Top Up – A good quality coat or jacket is definitely a must and there’s no skimping allowed on this, buy one from a well known brand such as Berghaus as a bad quality one might look nice but won’t keep you toasty on the inside.
3- Cotton is evil in the Winter – Avoid cotton against your skin as it traps moisture (i.e. sweat) and that ends up cooling you down instead. Why not try some thermal base layers?
4- Wear appropriate footwear – When it’s cold, wear boots and thick socks, when it’s raining, make sure your shoes or boots are waterproof. There’s nothing worse than soggy feet to make you feel cold all over! Again, wear appropriate fibers or you might end up with that horrid cold/sweaty feet feeling that’s so uncomfortable.
5- Hats and mittens – Keeping your extremities balmy will help maintain your whole body warm, so don’t forget those gloves and that hat at home. Extra points if your hat has animal ears.
6-Water is your friend – The cold will dry your skin and it’s harder for your body to stay warm in these conditions.
7- Wrap up – Scarves are always a good way of keeping those cool drafts from going down your neck. Brrr!
What am I missing here? Do you have any suggestions of your own?

I did not know that about cotton and water! This is very helpful for when I go to Riga. Thank you! x
Always happy to help!
I am totally learning about dressing for warmth now that I’m not in Florida anymore! It’s a whole different ballgame.
I’ve been here for 4 years and I think I’m still learning… and still hating it too haha!
A tank top and pantyhose are the base of all my outfits when it gets super cold here… which is rare
Really great tips!, I’m a huge fan of layering, particularly a viscose turtleneck under everything!. And it’s a great advice to buy quality waterproof coats and shoes. I’m also a huge fan of thick tights and pettipants, as I’m used to wear dresses!
I’m not living in a really cold region, but I needed some adaptation when I moved from the south three years ago!
