A Christmas Day well spent

Christmas, Christmas, Christmas. That time of the year that is both equally hated and loved by so many of us. The family dinners, the neverending Christmas TV… But we skipped all that at mine this time.

We didn’t skip the eating and the drinking, that’s for sure. It was hard work too – baking pies, making fudge, peeling taters, cutting parsnips, and of course, roasting a huge turkey. That, has to be said, was an adventure in itself. Thanks to Sarah’s help (my housemate), we managed to have a lovely dinner, with all the trimmings and it was an evening well spent. My old friend Roger from Lisbon was here too, as well as Vishal (my other housemate) and my friends Jasiminne and Henry.

It wasn’t the conventional dinner, just a gathering of friends who are for one reason or another away from our families, but it was one of the best Christmas ever. The playlist was good – I avoided the cliche songs and we ended the night watching the Downton Abbey Christmas Special. Ain’t that the best? We proved that although we are all away from our families (we sort of had the UN in our house tonight, with representatives from a great majority of the world’s continents), we can still have a nice Christmas, filled with love, smiles and… booze.

Here are some of the highlights of the day, complete with visions of uncooked turkey, cheesy Christmas jumpers and loads of smiles!

My festive Christmas wrapping. I seem to have made all sort of things with candy cane this year. Challenge for next year: a candy cane dinner!

Christmas crackers are always a must. The presents were rubbish and the jokes really bad, but pulling them apart and wearing the paper crowns is the best thing about them, really.

5 kilos of turkey. We were on a mission and we accomplished it. Now that’s another notch on our domestic goddess belt.

The chocolate and peppermint fudge I made as party favours for the guests. It was so nice I think I will have to make some more before the season ends.

The festive outfit: Jumper c/o New Look, Skirt from Zara, tights from Calzedonia, shoes from Office and headband from Poundland. Ha!

The turkey took a long, long time to roast. The boys were so hungry they got a little irritable. Fisticuffs ensued.

One of the best parts of the night? Doing all of this around the fire!

Hope you all had a lovely Christmas! What did you do this year? Did you do anything less conventional?
