Having an entrepreneurial spirit is extremely important, especially in times of economical crisis. The British Government estimates that:

• In 2014, there were 5.2 million businesses in the UK, over 99% of which were small and medium enterprises.

• Small and medium enterprises employed 15.2 million people in the UK in 2014.

Also, small businesses are started by people like you and me, who have a good idea and a passion – and that’s why they can be so interesting to look into, it’s motivating. Today I have interviewed William Forshaw (well, not today but you get what I mean) about his experience in starting his brand Maxwell Scott Bags, offering luxury and classic looking leather luggage and bags. Read on for all the details and a little offer for my readers.

1- When did you start your business?

I started the business 12 years ago after taking the decision that I would like to run my own business. Following a brief career in advertising, I wanted to try something different and had always fancied being an entrepreneur.

2- What gave you the idea for Maxwell Scott Bags?

Three reasons: 1. I saw a massive trend of scruffy cheap leather bags being carried by high flying business men/women in my previous life in London. 2. My mother imported a few handbags from Italy and I saw huge potential. 3. After spending some time in Italy doing some research and making a few contacts, I had the thirst and ambition to start designing my own bags.

3– Any advice for anyone who might want to start their own businesses?

To be successful, I put it down to three things: 1. The Idea – it’s got to be sound and have potential. 2. The Passion – ultimately, to be successful you have to work very hard and enjoy it! 3. A little luck – this can sometimes just happen, or will often be revealed with plenty of hard work.

4 – What is the most popular product on your range at the moment?

Difficult question. We have plenty of products that sell extremely well.  However, over the last few months its been gift orientated items such as: The Chia makeup bag, the Sestino Golf Cover and the DunoM leather wash bag.

5- What is the next step for Maxwell Bags?

We are looking to branch out to other countries.  We initially have our eyes on Switzerland and Australia, however Japan, China and Canada are also on the radar and we have plenty of interest.  Hopefully if all goes well, we will also be looking to open a shop in our beautiful city of York over the next few years.

Hehe that third bag is an almost perfect dupe of the Hermes Birkin! The last one though – DAMN that’s sexy. The model isn’t too bad either. x

I thought that looked like York in the first picture (honest – I did my MA there and loved walking around the city). The bags are lovely and classic, and I wish Michael luck in developing his business.
