Guest Post – Travel plans – Southeast Asia

You guys know I like to travel and I hope that is one of the reasons why you enjoy reading my blog. If you’ve been doing it for a while, you may have noticed that I haven’t been doing much of that lately, especially since I moved to London. I am not sure what my travel plans will be in the future but I think that any travel plans will be interesting, right? My friend Filipa (you may remember that she used to do all my outfit photos when I lived back in Grantham) is planning a trip to South East Asia and I thought that hearing about her plans would b somehow useful and interesting. I challenged her to create a couple of guest blog posts about this adventure she is embarking on and I’m very happy she has accepted it.
This first blog post is about the reasons why she is going travelling, there will be more with details on hotels and places to visit. Enjoy!

I’m going crazy. Well, at least according to my family. I have always been seen as very grounded, realistic and careful with my decisions but, for once, I’m throwing caution to the wind and I’m going travelling. That doesn’t sound too crazy, right? It may if I
tell you that we are going through a very tough restructure at work which means I no longer have any job security and currently live with the threat of unemployment over my head. Maybe not the best of times to go travelling for a month…

Against what my family thinks, I think this is actually the perfect reason to do it. If not now, when? As a friend of mine always says ‘no one ever died wishing they had worked more’. So why not live life without work as the compass?

The worst was deciding where to go. I’ve always wanted to go everywhere! Considering the budget limitations, and that my sister is coming with me (meaning I’m paying for her as well!), the first thing I did was surf the web for budget travelling. And there are LOADS of options!

Researching budget travelling and backpacking friendly countries lead me to fewer options than… the whole world. And a few countries came up in almost every website: Nepal, Thailand, Cambodia, Peru, Nicaragua, Indonesia and Sri Lanka. Well, Southeast Asia it is!

Next step: Guides! Since back when I was working in a bookstore, I’ve been collecting Lonely Planet Travel Guides. Sadly enough, they stayed back in Portugal when I moved to the UK. So my first purchase was ‘Southeast Asia on a Shoestring: big trip on small budgets’.

Now, being a project manager and the person that gets made fun of because I make lists for everything, you can imagine the amount of planning that is going into this adventure. After telling Sara about my plans, she has asked me to share this adventure with all the blog readers. Which I will gladly do. I’ll let you in on all my planning, tips I’ve read on how to save a few pennies (and whether or not they worked for me), my experiences and photos, lots and lots of photos.

In return, all I ask is for your feedback. Let me know your thoughts, ask whatever you want and just enjoy this adventure with me. May this work as a trigger for you to come up with your own adventures. And may you be crazy as well, even if just for a bit.

Filipa I’m looking forward to your Southeast Asia posts! Myself, I’m from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia but shockingly I haven’t travelled much around SEA except for Vietnam, Thailand, and Singapore. I’m planning a SEA trip – Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, the works – for next year (or even this winter!) – so I’m really excited to see your travel plans. x
