I am not an athlete

I shamelessly stole the title of this blog post from Mindy Kaling, as she has a section on her book with the same title. The reason being that it is the absolute truth. I am not an athlete. Never was, never will be and I’ve resigned to that fact.

After the age of 12 or 13, when I had swimming lessons for my scoliosis (which is still there, thank you very much), that must have been the last time I’ve ever done any sort of regular physical activity. The truth is, I didn’t really like it and I still don’t. As a kid, the company of a book was always something more enticing and rewarding than climbing on trees or (god forbid) team sports. Just remembering the team sports we had to practise at school makes my stomach turn.

Recently, in a conversation with a friend about physical activity and how good it makes him feel and how great it is for depressive moods, I realised I that I know all of that, in theory. In a similar manner, I also know what I need to stop eating to lose the extra weight I’ve put on in the last year. But, I just can’t bring myself to do it. Being sporty has never been part of my life or even, identity. I was never competitive (who cares who wins the game?).

The question is then, how can I move on from this, to become happier and healthier and feel better physically?

The answer is to find something you can enjoy doing, that is fun and doesn’t feel too much like a gym. For me, anyway. That’s why when Missy from Rebounce London emailed me to come and check out her class, I thought it could be a great opportunity to try something new that I could potentially enjoy. I invited my friend Sarah, we got matching sweat bands and there we went.

And that I did. It’s a very intense class, I tell you no lies, but you have a lot of fun doing it. Basically, you have to jump on a trampoline to do your routines, which has the advantage of not only being more fun than a regular aerobics class but also reducing the impact on your knees. The choreographies are complicated for someone like me, who has no motor skills but as long as you try, you’ll be alright.

I am not sure if I am allowed to do this kind of exercise regularly because of my back (I’m in the process of getting that checked out), but it’s definitely a lot more enjoyable than a regular gym session, so I would really would go back to one of these.

(not my most flattering pic, but hey, was having fun.)
