London – Sushinoen, a Japanese dining experience

A couple of weeks ago I was invited to partake in an authentic Japanese meal, organised by the peeps over at NuffNang UK. As I am a huge fan of Japanese cuisine and I knew some of my blogger buddies were coming, I obviously had to say yes. The restaurant in question was Sushinoen, a place I had never been to before, in the Whitechapel area, in London. I’m glad it’s now under my radar, as the food was amazing,

I got there and met up with my fellow blogger guests, some of which I already knew, others I didn’t but was very happy to meet. I’m adding a list of all the bloggers that were present at the bottom of this post, so you can see their take on the meal if you like. Different people, different photos, opinions, etc, amirite? Plus, always nice to explore new blogs, if you don’t know them.

Read on, for some deliciousness!

We sat down at a sunken table and ordered our drinks. I also noticed that some Japanese anime classics from Studio Ghibli were being projected on the wall. Super cute, or should I say, kawaii? I got myself some calpis and the rest of the group had some plum wine. Then the food started coming to our table… They wanted to give us a good overview of all the dishes they have on offer and it was a cornucopia of food, what we experienced that afternoon. Started with the braised pork belly (butakakuni), followed by some of the best Agedashi tofu I’ve ever had, the beef tataki and the white tuna carpaccio. After a short break in which we got to eat some mixed seaweed salad (super healthy!), we got some shumai (the little parcels you see in the bamboo steamer), the pan-fried chicken gyoza and some pickles to cleanse the palate. The vegetable and prawn tempura was perfect – crispy and virtually oil free just the way it should be.

By this time we were already starting to feel full but a few big trays of sushi rolls arrived at the table – seared tuna and salmon on California roll, prawn tempura on California roll. At this point, we had a long break during which we chatted and got to know each other a bit better and we all started to feel super full. We were supposed to also have had the Sukyaki hot pot but we got to the point that we couldn’t take any more food, no matter how delicious it was. The meal was finished earlier than expected, trimmed perfectly with some mochi and a scoop of matcha ice cream. My favourite!

I love going out for meals with cool bloggers like this, the company is great and I don’t feel bad or obnoxious for taking photos of the food all the time!

After this, I just rolled back home for a much needed nap. Thank you Sushinoen and Nuffnang UK for the invitation, it was an excellent gastronomical experience.
