We’re up all night to get lucky

June 10, 2013

Here are some of the looks from the week I spent in Florida. I better crack on with posting the photos of the trip… I have so many! It’ll be hard to pick a few for the blog. It was an amazing week, with equal parts of relaxation and excitement and of course, spending time with the hubby.

Details: Flying Eiffel Towers – Reko, thrifted at Oxfam, Gold Sandals – Topshop, thrifted on my trip to Sheffield, Flower – H&M (on sale), Golden Bracelets – present from Mr D’s grandma.

Details: Red Lobster Dress – Rodnik Band, via Ebay (some funny guy asked if Î was from Maine, badummm tschhhhhhh), Tote Bag – from a Design Festival hubby attended in Melbourne, Sandals – Present from Mr D’s grandma, Flower – H&M (on sale)

As I was planning, we did a couple of road trips  (we ended up going to Disneyland, yay!), picked up the new album from Daft Punk, and it became the soundtrack for the week. I loved the songs, they have a very amusing and “feel good” retro feeling. It might not be for all tastes and a lot of people were disappointed as their sound on this record is totally different from their previous more electronica sounding albums. For my part, as I’ve always had a weak spot for disco, I appreciated the grooves on this record. The Get Lucky song just makes me want to dance! These dudes do it the right way:

As it is Monday I am adding this to Patty’s Visible Monday over at Not Dead Yet Style.

Road trippin’

May 3, 2013

Road trippin’ with my two favorite allies
Fully loaded we got snacks and supplies
It’s time to leave this town
It’s time to steal away
Let’s go get lost
Anywhere in the U.S.A.

(excerpt from Red Hot Chilli Peppers – Road Trippin’)

I’m so happy that I am travelling to see the husband in Florida again soon… Skype is very useful but it gets old after a while. We only see each other a few times per year so we like to do something special when we meet. I want to go to Disneyland but we can’t really afford it so instead we will be doing a little road trip. We’ve had so much fun before singing along to classic rock on the radio and driving into the sunset, we thought we’d do it again. Nothing like being stuck together in a car for some real bonding.

As we are planning a road trip ourselves, I thought I’d put together a little list of what we ( and you would) need if you are going driving around Florida or anywhere hot, for that matter. So, after you decide on your destination, it’s time to start preparing!

You will need:

  • A GPS or a map. We prefer the GPS option as it is so much more convenient and you don’t need to worry about folding it right when you’re done with it.
  • Plan your trip in advance and check what might be of interest on the way to your final destination – we’ll be having a picnic in one of the National Parks. It’s cheap and you get to relax close to Nature and see some funny critters.
  • A car! We will be driving the Miata but if you’re not local, you can check what car rental is closest.
  • Verify the weather forecast – you might want to postpone your plans if a storm is on the way. It’s no fun to be caught in a hurricane, I can tell you (remember my encounter with Sandy in NYC?).
  • Wear light clothes even if your car or apartment has AC as you will melt once you set foot outdoors.
  • Sunnies and sunblock are a must – the sun can get really strong and if you don’t protect your skin you’ll end up looking like a lobster.
  • Stay hydrated – drink plenty of water or natural juices, avoid sugary soft drinks – they rot your teeth!
  • Don’t leave the house without applying plenty of mosquito repellent. Take the bottle with you to reapply as needed. Those bloodsuckers are nasty, last year the bite scars lasted for months!

Other than that, just use your imagination! You might want to do a music compilation for driving (did you hear that Mr D?) or get some camping gear if you want to go away for longer than a day. If you’re not a fan of camping, there’s plenty of B&B’s you can stay at for cheap. Stop the car and walk when possible – you will save some gas, you will exercise and have plenty more photo opportunities -there’s lots of great scenery for outfit photos! For more ideas on places to go and what to do, check out the Guardian’s Florida Road Trip live blog here.

Do you have any more suggestions of your own? I’d love to hear them!

My last day in Florida

February 18, 2013

On my last day in Florida we did some shopping – we found a couple of charity shops near Sarasota when we went looking for a different place to eat. On our way back home we decided to stop by one of the many State Parks you can find on the side of the road in Florida. This time it was the Oscar Scherer State Park.

It was a great idea, as the place was nice and the weather was sunny, making the trek around the lake a pleasant and relaxing experience.

Bug dress – Forever 21 (from a shopping trip to the mall a few days prior) ; Shoes – Zara ; Necklace– present from Mr D’s Grandma.

Hubby was looking good in his skinny jeans, 70’s vintage shirt and Clark’s shoes.

By this time I was already sad about having to leave the next day and we ended up having some good moments there. As there are camping facilities in the park, next to the lake there was an activity room and as it happened, there was a group of people playing music, just jamming and singling along. It was very pleasant and as we were about to leave they started playing ‘Rock me Mama like a Wagon Wheel’, a song Bob Dylan drafted and was finished by Old Crow Medicine Show and also covered by the more popular Mumford and Sons. It’s a song about travelling across America and see the loved one. We just stopped and listened and that moment stuck in my mind and the song gained a lot more meaning. Just go listen and you will understand.

On the way out I saw a little cardinal bird. Although it’s been for a long time one of my favourite birds I had never seen one up close as they don’t live around here. It made me very happy and it was a great way of ending that day. I tried to take a closer photo but he wasn’t having any of that.

The next day I got back to England with happiness for the good times we had but also a lot of sadness in my heart, as once again we will have to spend a few months without seeing each other. I don’t think I’ll ever get used to it.

Ybor City

February 13, 2013

Ybor City is part of Tampa (in Florida) and has to be one of my favourite places in that part of the world so far. The place is famous for its old cigar factories and you can see a lot of details referencing that – murals, cigar shops and even a lady rolling them on a window. There is eben a Cigar Museum but we ended up not going. Instead we just roamed the streets, had good food and did some vintage shopping!

I got that Bergdorf Goodman skirt – the hanging chains look strange but it looks good when you actually put it on! Plus it’s good quality and was on the half price rack!

We then moved to a different store a few doors down and were surprised at how big it was!

Lots of Hawaiian shirts! There won’t be a shortage any time soon!

What I wore: The cloche hat and bag from Target, sleeping cats dress from ASOS, Bow Shoes from Office (via Ebay).

I really liked Ybor City and we may go back the next time I visit Florida!
