The Tattoo Files – Lynsay Neil of Miss West End Girl

June 13, 2014

Name: Lynsay Neil,  Age: 28, Location: Glasgow

What was your first tattoo and how old were you when you got it?

My first tattoo was my stocking seams, which run right up the backs of both legs, topped with bows! I got them when I was 18 or 19 and dazzled by the world of burlesque and 1950s glamour – I still am!

Do you have a favourite tattoo artist you go to?

Well, I’ve actually only ever had my tattoos done by the same artist up to now, so that’s difficult to answer! I do believe that selecting the right artist is crucial part of the process – finding someone talented that you trust and that ‘gets’ you and your personal style. That and a kick-ass idea that you adore are the keys to tattoo magic! All of my tattoos (so far) have been by Kevin Younger of Lucky Cat Tattoo. But there are so many talented artists out there now, it’s really an exciting time for tattoo culture.

Which one of your tattoos is a favourite?

This is always a tough question! My stocking seams always get the most comments from others, especially in the summer! My favourite changes every time that I’m asked! I love anything that is cute, bright and colourful – so seeing my smiling sugar skull, cupcake and waving Maneki Neko on my arms always makes me happy!

What were your parents reactions when you started decorating yourself?

I’m lucky to have a great relationship with my parents and before I got tattooed for the first time we talked about it (I still lived at home at the time) and there was no shouting or anything like that – it was all very civilised! I waited until I was legally allowed to get tattooed and was determined to go to the best artist in my city. I think because I didn’t do anything rash they respected that. Several tattoos later they are still totally cool with it.

Do you want more art?

Yes, definitely!

What are your plans?

I’d love to get something that ties in with my love for vintage Florida – something with a palm tree and/ or flamingo I reckon!

The Tattoo Files – Fiona Morris

The Tattoo Files

Name Fiona Morris , Age  43 , Location Grantham

What was your first tattoo and how old were you when you got it?

Winged heart in the centre of my back just before my 38th birthday

Which one is your favourite?

Don’t really have a favourite tattoo, love them all, no regrets J

Some have meanings behind them, like my girl’s best friend and Rock of ages which is for my sister as she’s the strong one in the family and keeps us all together.

Rosie the riveter and poppies, bombs and soldiers grave, I wanted as a tribute to all those who sacrificed everything for us to have the freedom we do and to remember everyday.

The Tattoo Files

Do you feel that people look at you differently because you’re a tattooed woman?

I do get some unwanted attention from having tattoos, not sure if it’s because I’m a woman or just that some people don’t like ink.

I’ve had a unique dress style since my early teens so have always had people look at me differently, especially in a small town, so maybe I just don’t notice the looks anymore 😉

Strangely the older generation seem to be less concerned, I often get pensioners chatting about my 1940’s / 1950’s dress style and my tattoos don’t bother them.

The Tattoo Files

Do you want to get more ink? What would you get?

Definitely getting more ink, still got gaps!! My partner and I go to ET’s Tattoos in Norwich and book a few days each year.

Have some ideas, want flowers on my collar bones but otherwise not decided yet, always trying to find something unique to my lifestyle and personality.

The Tattoo Files – Martin Barker

December 13, 2013

It is now time for another installment of the Tattoo Files series. this time I convinced my friend and co-worker Martin to pose for a couple of portraits and tell us all about his passion for tattoos. We took these photos at lunch time, while hiding in a meeting room. thank goodness no one barged in on us as it would look quite the weird thing to do!

Name, Age, Location:

Martin Barker, 23, Grantham

When did you get your first tattoo and what was it?

When I turned 18 and planned to have my one and only tattoo (That failed) I watched Dead Poets Society and discovered the concept of Carpe Diem! And Seize the day I did 🙂

Which one is your favourite?

The marathon details on my leg, not only because I achieved my aim of running a marathon, but also as it is my own handwriting and so no one else will have that font.
Do you have any that you regret? (If so, why?)

I don’t really regret any as at the time when I got them I know I would have been feeling pumped and so it was worth it for that, but possibly PMA- I’m all for positive mental attitude but I probably could have come up with something a bit more creative.

Any plans for acquiring more art?

After acquiring quite a few quotes I want either an Orangutan under my arm pit swinging from my armpit hair or I will draw a comic book of the highlights of my life.

The Tattoo Files

October 18, 2013

I am inaugurating today a new feature on the blog –  about real people with tattoos.

Emma is a talented photographer whom I met when both attended the Blogcademy blogging seminar and I was immediately fascinated by her tattoos (and her hair colour!). Good thing it didn’t take much convincing to be featured, so you all get to see her fab body art. I shot some pictures and sent her a few questions. I hope you enjoy this.

Name, Age, Location

My name is Emma North, I’m 31 years old and live in sunny Aberdeenshire in the North East of Scotland.

When did you get your first tattoo and what was it?

My first tattoo was when I had just turned 18, it was a weird lily kinda thing on my shoulder but it now looks like a yucky blob so I will need to get it reworked at some point.

Which one is your favourite?

My favourite tattoo….. that’s a tricky one but it is probably my nightmare before christmas full sleeve as my son Jack (the pumpkin king) loves the film (so do I) and because Tim Burton partly inspired me to attend art school.

Do you have any that you regret? (If so, why?)

I don’t regret any of my tattoos as they are part of me and who I was at the time I got them… like a visual walking diary.

Any plans for acquiring more art?

I have lots of plans for new ink in the future but I would really like to get a compass on my chest with the north pointing towards my heart for my husband… as our surname is North.
