Inspiration – Nevermind the day-glo, here’s neon punk!

May 19, 2012

While watching the “She’s a Punk Rocker U.K.” documentary (you can watch it too, if you are so inclined and you can do it here, you won’t regret it), I came across Rubella Ballet, a punk/gothic band and a very colourful one at it! Rubella Ballet formed in 1979, were active until 1991 and reformed in 2000.

I was fascinated by the colour of the outfits with their signature neon craziness and spiky hair. As they say in the documentary, they made all their outfits and looks- at a time when everything was all very conservative and no one could go and buy ready made punk or gothic clothes with the same ease as kids do these days. Their clothes were mostly made from garments found in charity shops that were then altered by them or as we call it these days, upcycled. That’s what I call true originality and ingenuity.

If you watch some of their videos and look at the photos below you will find that what they were doing back then in the beginning of the 80’s wouldn’t look out of place on today’s catwalks – I am thinking of the Meadham Kirshhoff collections I’ve seen over the last couple of years, for instance. Just go to their website here and see for yourself.

Ready for some rad punk girls?
