Is it too late to talk about resolutions?

January 10, 2014

With all the travelling I didn’t have time or opportunity to write about my resolution for this year. After my savings have been depleted by travelling, shopping, driving lessons and replacing my old computer, it is now time to fill the pot again.

The wardrobe is bursting at the seams and needs some streamlining. For that reason I am not buying any clothes this year. That’s right. Not even those 99p bargains from Ebay. Reason being, I have no more space and I don’t really need a new pair of shoes (even if second hand) every week. I have plenty of items that still haven’t had a proper opportunity to shine either!

So,this is what is going to happen:

-I’m not buying clothes (unless it is something that needs replacing like tights and the such). The only exception will be when I am travelling as I always like to go shopping in other places. It should be the only indulgence I will allow myself.

-I’m not buying any fashion magazines either. I usually buy a few when I take the train but I should actually read the books I have been hoarding away and stop cramming my room with magazines. I usually cut them up and make clipping books out of them but I have no time for that.

-I’m going to try and alter some of the clothes I already own and hopefully learn how to sew properly, so I can make my own clothes.

-I’m not buying any more makeup unless it is something that needs replacing (like eyeliner, which I wear every day). I think I have eye shadow in all the colours of the rainbow and some more already.

-I’m not buying any more nail polish. I have all sorts of colours and shades, and only 20 nails to paint each time. I’d have to be a millipede to be able use all the polish I have in my lifetime.

-I’ll try to do clothes swaps as much as possible, as getting new different things is always interesting and exciting. the fact that I am attending one such event tomorrow at ASOS was synchronicity at its best (expect the full report next week).

-Be more realistic with my style and donate more clothes this year.

– In less words, enjoy what I already have a LOT more.

What are your thoughts? Any suggestions on how to get through this?

A little bit of history

December 16, 2013

One of the great things about buying antique and vintage clothes is to imagine the history behind the pieces. Unless we have something that belonged to a family member, sometimes it is difficult to know where it came from or who owned it. When I get that rare glimpse of it, it is a fantastic feeling. I ordered this beautiful 2nd World War American nurse cape off Ebay. I was extremely surprised when the receipt printout came with a handwritten note, that I felt was imbued with love. It reads:

“Sara,

Do hope you will enjoy my Great Aunt Maude’s cape. She was a fine lady and very dedicated to her profession.

Regards, Roberta”

That got me imagining what Maude looked like. How did she dress? What did she see during the war? If only our clothes could talk. All I can do is cherish it and wear it to my heart’s content.

Details: Cape – Vintage American Nurse cape from Ebay, Dress – 70’s vintage, from Vintage Basement in London, Boots – Rocket Dog (via TK Maxx), Cardigan – H&M, Peace Belt – Primark, Head Scarf– Moschino (via TK Maxx).

I’m joining Patti’s Visible Monday, as it has become a habit.

ASOS #SocialSchool

December 11, 2013

Last Saturday I had once again the privilege of attending another event at ASOS. This time, Social School. Sedge Beswick, one of the social media ladies at ASOS promised to teach us everything there is to know about social media and so she did.

After a few nibbles, of course, which included branded cupcakes with several social media platforms.

We were shown a fun presentation, with a lot of interesting facts and statistics about social media and its platforms. We also played Social Bingo – each and every one of us got a card with several words and expressions that we had to cross out every time Sedge mentioned them. As with traditional bingo, the first one to complete a card got a present! I didn’t win anything on this first game but I did on the next…

As always, there is plenty of beautiful clothes around the activities room, that we all feel like taking home. As that is not possible, I just snapped a couple of photos.

After a break for more drinks, nibbles and chatting, we got back to the room and had a social media themed pub quiz. I got 2 questions right and got to bring home these festive accessories:

I also got a very cute iPhone 5 cover for my friend Filipa, as no one really wanted them.

I asked one of the girls to snap a photo of what I wore quickly, as this skirt was getting its first outing. Head scarf – Moschino, Hello Kitty Jumper – H&M, PVC Skirt – River Island (on sale, get it NOW!), Boots – Zara.

Once again, I thank ASOS for the opportunity to attend these events and be part of the group of Insiders.

PS: check the lowdown of the event at the Access All ASOS website for more details!

Disposable Style

November 4, 2013

I was just looking at my files and I still have a gazillion outfits to share and found these photos taken with a disposable camera. I like the way they look, I should do this more often.

This outfit was baptized ‘The Metallina’, as it is a mix of heavy metal with ballerina. I love that skirt, I wish the button hadn’t popped that day. I have to wear it with a safety pin as it’s too tight now LOL. Leather panel skirt, Office ballerinas, Judas Priest t-shirt, Denim Jacket (customized by me) and Claw Ring all from Ebay.

On this day I was wearing : Cosmic Cat tee – from the men’s section at Target (from one of my trips to Florida), Leopard Print Skirt -Ebay, Shoes – Dune (TK Maxx), Headscarf – Zara, Sunnies – Moschino, Pleather Jacket – H&M

Here I am, drinking a can of liquid cellulitis (aka a can of full fat cola) and trying to do a jumping photo but failing miserably. Headscarf  and jacket are the same as before, Dress – I forget the brand but I got it from someone’s blog sale, Tights -Ebay, Shoes – Vans Hello Kitty, Bag – from a swap with my friend Lili.

And as always, it begs the question: which one is your favourite?

Adding this to Visible Monday over at Patti’s!

Edit: Added to Jane’s Shiny T Tuesday!

Night at the Bowling Alley

October 11, 2013

Last week my friend David was visiting as he always does every 3 months (he works for the same company in Lisbon and has to come in regularly for meetings) and I thought we should do something different. As I’ve only been bowling once before, it could be a fun experience. I was right and we both had a great time at Tenpin in Grantham.

We went in, bought a few games, got our special bowling shoes and after a few Big Lebowski jokes – talking like Jesus, the John Turturro character and pretending to polish our bowling balls – we got to play. As we are no pros, we played it with the barriers up so that makes it easier – at least the chances of actually hitting something are higher.

Strike! (I wish)

Picking a bowling ball for me is really easy – being petite (the nice way of saying I’m a hobbit) means I can’t lift the heavier ones, not to mention throwing them down the bowling alley.

We were very well treated by the staff, who were extremely nice and courteous. We even got the manager to explain the rules of scoring, about which we were very confused!

Outfit details: Braided Headband – H&M, Angora Cropped Cardigan – H&M (via Ebay), Dress – Target (from one of my Florida expeditions), Shoes – Irregular Choice, Bowling Ball – Tenpin’s own.

After 3 games of bowling we decided we still wanted to have more fun and played Dance Dance Revolution. For those who have no idea what it is, I’ll explain: You have a screen and a panel on the floor with “sensitive” tiles (they feel you stomping on them , the poor things). You have to listen to the music and follow the cues given on the screen of which tiles you should be stepping on. We danced to Billy Ocean and Duran Duran as they seemed to be the most mellow songs on there. Being totally unfit and inexperienced, we figured it would be the safest choice. Nonetheless we had a laugh playing it and I can tell you it was a proper workout. I’m not surprised that some of my friends use their home versions to do some cardio exercising. I can tell you it’s a lot more fun than the gym! Maybe I should get myself one too…

Do you go bowling often? How about Dance Dance Revolution, have you tried it yourself?
