ASOS Swap Shop

January 13, 2014

Last Saturday I headed down to London on more time, for the first ASOS Insiders event of the year, this time a clothes swapping event, with talks about ASOS Marketplace and some of its vendors.

The premise was simple: you had to bring up to 3 good quality barely worn or unworn items, to swap with your fellow bloggers. There was also a selection of ASOS samples available for grabs. We were asked to fill in a tag for each item with our info and details about the clothes and place them on the rails. After that we were given some time to wander around and see what we liked. I put my eye on a few pieces and when the time came we all went for it. It was all very civilized and all of the 3 pieces I picked were on my ‘watch list’. After that we were told to just grab anything we wanted as they didn’t want any clothes left on there. I ended up picking up a few more items and came back with more than I brought in. Result! This was my first clothes swap event and I really liked it. I hope I can attend more during the year, as according to my resolutions, I’ll have to, if I want new clothes.

The talks about Marketplace were very informative – I had never really considered selling stuff on there but now I think it’s a really good idea. It’s better than Ebay because you can list up to 100 items, for a fixed price and you don’t pay anything to do the listing, only a commission when you sell something.

The first talk was by ASOS Marketplace’s very own manager, followed by Amy from Mod Dolly (what a surprise!) and Steve from House of Jam. The talks by the vendors were extremely inspiring and we could see how their businesses have been steadily growing organically.

As the event started early we were treated to breakfast and later a light lunch that was very delicious! I loved the mozarella and tomato skewers. Nom!

Sarah from A Million Dresses looked really cute in her Mod Dolly tartan dress and her apple shaped wicker bag but what really caught my eye were her nails. How sweet are they?

Laura from That’s so Yesterday, Siobhan from boutique Shop Floor Whore and yours truly showing off our crazy phone covers. We were clearly the colour brigade of the day.

I was fascinated by Shop Floor Whore goodies – reminds me a lot of the 90’s rave and club culture, what’s there not to like? A totally fun explosion of colour and glitter – right up my alley. More on Shop Floor Whore soon!

Mod Dolly’s rail at the event, with some of the items from the current collection, one of them my lovely dress that I wore on Christmas Day in Marrakech.

Here I am, posing for an outfit photo with Lucy from Lucy Loves, who I had already the pleasure of meeting at a previous event. She is so nice, I hope to hang out with Lucy again really soon!

(What I wore, in case you are wondering: Beret – Betsey Johnson, Cardigan and long sleeve black top – Primark, Dress – Sonia Rykiel for H&M, Pencil Scarf and black socks – H&M, Shoes – Portuguese designer Filipe Sousa at Eureka Shoes)

After the event Amy took Laura and I back to Dragon Castle for some dim sum. Delicious!!!

The lovely Charlotte from Crave Green Velvet made a video of the event – with great music to go along with it too (M83! Love them!). Make sure you watch it.

Thanks ASOS for organizing another fun event. We Insiders are truly spoiled!

(I’m adding this post to Patti’s Visible Monday, as it is outfit sharing time!)

These boots were made for walking…

August 20, 2013

Haaaa the end of Summer. The temperature drop we had in the last few days got me thinking about Fall clothes and about wrapping up in warm and fluffy wool jumpers.I am enjoying the nice warm weather but that made me think about what to wear when it gets chilly. I tidied up my closet the past weekend and went through my shoe collection. Seeing that I now live in a country where the past few Winters have been quite harsh, I noticed that I don’t seem to have near enough boots to my liking. I had a look around here and there and although the boots in the shops are nice, I want something different. So I started doodling and thought – What if we could have the crazy boots we always dreamed of?

So I came up with some fun (and funny) designs and thought how amusing it would be to design footwear for some of my blogger friends. They may not like them in the end but they really were the inspiration behind some of these:

The Circus Boots

These would be made of red matte leather and the stars could maybe be silver or white patent leather. I thought they would be perfect for Desiree of Pull Yr Socks Up. I can see her rocking these with one of her tutus!

The Attitude Boots

Black leather, of course, with silver buckles and silver spikes. A bit too much for me but I thought they would be the boots I would buy Suzanne of Idee Fixe if I ever had to pick a pair for her.

The Grey Velvet Boots

Imagined these for Vix of Vintage Vixen, a very glamourous lady indeed. The yellow should be more mustardy and the green leaves should be embroidered on grey velvet. They may look uncomfortable but they would look fab if they were real.

The Divoon Orange Boots

These would go to Helga of Helga von Trollop, of course. I can see her wearing these with one of her fabulous capes and her beehive style do. I haven’t decided if I want them in patent leather or just regular leather. Either way, those bows would look amazing.

The Navy Boots

And these are for me, thank you very much. As I’ve said countless times before, this is one of my favourite colour combos.

Now all we need to find is someone to make these for us. And not too expensive, please! Which one is your favourite?

Road trip to Manchester

April 20, 2013

Last Thursday was a busy day! Work in the morning, hospital appointment at lunch time and road trip to Manchester for the rest of the day!

Filipa, Daniela and I got in the car and drove up North to attend the Company Magazine Fashion Forum. We had a laugh on the way there and got to see different landscapes – it’s flat as a pancake where I live and it was refreshing to see some hills.

We arrived a little bit earlier so we still had time to walk around and see the streets and do a little shopping – got myself some bargains on sale at H&M, woopwoop! The rain had also stopped just in time for our arrival. How lucky was that?

Details: Dress – Suncoo (via TK Maxx), Long Sleeve T-shirt – Primark, Cardigan– Vintage, Flatform Shoes – Kurt Geiger (via Tk Maxx),  Crazy Cat Lady BagAhcahcum Muchacha (my current favourite Japanese brand), Jacket – H&M Trend (via Ebay).

After all this we headed to the event, held at one of the  Manchester University buildings. It was full of young girls, some of them with their mums and that was nice to see.

Some of the other atendees. The girl in the pink hair was to me the most interesting looking girl there. I would like to know where her blog is as I think her style was quite individual. (I’m not being funny but I saw 3 different colours of the same H&M sweater in the same room).

The speakers were:

Kathryn Kenny – New Look – Senior Digital Content Manager
Victoria White – Company Magazine’s Editor
Oonagh Brennan – Company’s Associate Editor Fashion
Karen Jones Russell – Stylist
Jen Holmes – Blogger at A Little Bird Told Me and Freelance Writer

The conversation was quite interesting and I came back home with a few more ideas (and clearer ones) on what I want to do and what I should be doing to get there. I particularly liked hearing Jen Holmes talk about her work – I’d love to do the same thing! I’ve been working in the finance industry for too long and it’s about time that I move back towards a more creative field. I kind of owe it to myself!

That’s me, taking photos! Photo courtesy of Amy Jane Alice. Click on the link to see her detailed account of the event.

After the Q&A session we grabbed our goodie bags and drove back to the G. It was a very tiring day but I think that it was worth it.

Don’t look over your shoulder but we are coming.

April 8, 2013

Last Saturday I hopped on the train to Sheffield, to meet with Curtise of The Secondhand Years for some quality time together. I had never been to Sheffield before and Curtise was a great guide and we did manage to cram a lot of stuff in my few hours in town. As soon as I arrived we headed to the Vintage & Craft Market, where we saw lovely creative things and highly covetable vintage wares. We both picked up a couple of things and had a chat with a few nice people. Curtise acted as the bank as with all the excitement when I arrived I forgot to mention I needed to stop by the ATM and had only a few pounds on me. Thank heavens one of us was paying attention!

There were a few different sellers with the cutest fascinators, decorated with teensy flowers, little birds, etc. I felt like picking up one of them but decided against it because frankly, it would be another one to join the ranks of the too outrageous to be worn out and left in a box to gather dust. After a nice light lunch in a cafe we headed to the outskirts for some charity shopping – that’s where the best shops are. We visited all of them on this road and found a couple of things we liked.

There’s Curtise!

After filling up our bags with second hand clothes we headed to the center and stopped by at the art museum. We didn’t have much time to see the exhibits – there was one about Ruskin that looked interesting enough – but I did get a look at the building itself. In the lobby they have these sculptures made of cutlery – how cool is that? Sheffield was once a center for the steel industry, so it is an important part of the city’s history and cultural references.

The Winter garden is lovely, a very nice spot to sit down and have a little rest if you’ve been walking for a while.

Here’s what I wore: Jacket – Primark, Bag – Target, Musical Dress – from Ebay, not sure where it’s from originally as the tag’s been cut off. Pink Angora Jumper – Jane Norman, via Oxfam, Shirt – Ebay, Shoes – Office, via Ebay, Cat Print Headscarf – Mango, got it many years ago on a trip to Porto. I was trying to hide the Oxfam plastic bag but it’s peering from behind my legs. I also have to say that I don’t think I’ve ever worn such a combination of moulting clothes – both the jumper and the jacket were shedding fur everywhere, I must have lost a pound of it throughout the city during the day.

The day was sunny and very pleasant and lots of peoiple were out, including these kids who were getting wet in these water spouts.

After all the walking we did we decided it was time for a bit of a sit down and a cheeky drink and a bit more of a chat.

It was a lovely day out and about with Curtise, she is as lovely and funny as she comes across on her blog. We will definitely get together again in the future for some more shenanigans. Thank you Curtise for showing me your city and putting up with my incessant chattering! And now, for the loot I brought back home:

Chelsea Girl hearts dress, M&S nautical sandals, Lulu London sort of poncho, deer figurine for my collection, present from Curtise.

1970’s Lurex bolero thingy, Golden bow sandals from Top Shop and Some big beads I mean to shorten.
