Flashback Friday – Personal style from the vault…

January 24, 2014

Almost a year ago the company hosting my site had a problem with their servers- causing loss of data and the blog being down for weeks. For that reason I never got round to sharing all the photos I took in Belgium last year and it’s a shame not to. I did a roundup of all the outfits I wore that weekend so here they are. Better late then never. I think they’re cute enough not to be wasted. Do you agree?

Dress – H&M, (via Ebay), Shoes – Office, (via Ebay, now defunct), Thigh Highs – H&M, Jumper – French Connection (via Ebay), Necklace – Zara (borrowed from Ohlalali)

Leopard Ears Hat and Coat – H&M, both via Ebay, Scarf – El Corte Ingles, I’ve lost it in the meantime, Blue Gloves – present from my friend Linda in NYC (hello!), Muff – Ebay, Bag – Target

Dress, with heart pockets and back buttons – Nishe, Long sleeve top – Primark, Cardigan – Vintage, Leggings – Calzedonia, Shoes – Office, via Ebay. It’s also funny to see how much my hair has grown in almost a year – it’s down to my shoulders now!

Daria Dress – ASOS, Boots – Dr Martens, Shades – I don’t remember the name of the brand but I got them in TK Maxx. I call this look the Daria look because it’s just like the character.

Jumper – From Ebay, Skirt – from a second hand shop in Brussels. I had to put it on because it wouldn’t fit my suitcase haha. I love how it’s got little skiers all over it.

Which one is your favourite? This weekend will be a quiet one, and I need it. Hope you have a good one too!

Is it too late to talk about resolutions?

January 10, 2014

With all the travelling I didn’t have time or opportunity to write about my resolution for this year. After my savings have been depleted by travelling, shopping, driving lessons and replacing my old computer, it is now time to fill the pot again.

The wardrobe is bursting at the seams and needs some streamlining. For that reason I am not buying any clothes this year. That’s right. Not even those 99p bargains from Ebay. Reason being, I have no more space and I don’t really need a new pair of shoes (even if second hand) every week. I have plenty of items that still haven’t had a proper opportunity to shine either!

So,this is what is going to happen:

-I’m not buying clothes (unless it is something that needs replacing like tights and the such). The only exception will be when I am travelling as I always like to go shopping in other places. It should be the only indulgence I will allow myself.

-I’m not buying any fashion magazines either. I usually buy a few when I take the train but I should actually read the books I have been hoarding away and stop cramming my room with magazines. I usually cut them up and make clipping books out of them but I have no time for that.

-I’m going to try and alter some of the clothes I already own and hopefully learn how to sew properly, so I can make my own clothes.

-I’m not buying any more makeup unless it is something that needs replacing (like eyeliner, which I wear every day). I think I have eye shadow in all the colours of the rainbow and some more already.

-I’m not buying any more nail polish. I have all sorts of colours and shades, and only 20 nails to paint each time. I’d have to be a millipede to be able use all the polish I have in my lifetime.

-I’ll try to do clothes swaps as much as possible, as getting new different things is always interesting and exciting. the fact that I am attending one such event tomorrow at ASOS was synchronicity at its best (expect the full report next week).

-Be more realistic with my style and donate more clothes this year.

– In less words, enjoy what I already have a LOT more.

What are your thoughts? Any suggestions on how to get through this?

Outfit details: Beret – American Apparel (present from Linda), necklaceHead Full Of Feathers (from the Blogcademy goody bag), Stripy top – H&M, Dress – on sale in some mall in Florida, Cardigan – Bershka (I’ve had it for years, it has little mushrooms on it <3), Tights – Kohl’s (90 cents of a dollar), Sneakers – House of Holland x Superga (via Ebay), Nail Wraps – Models Own

Photos by Filipa, on our lunch break.

PS: I am adding this post to Sacramento’s Share in Style at Mis Papelicos – the theme this time is favourite colour – red white and blue is one of my favourite colour combos (so I keep saying too!)

Our first day in Marrakech

January 8, 2014

After all the troubles I had been through to get to Marrakech (see previous post), I was well excited and eager to go out and explore, with a camera in hand. It was now Christmas day and I was staying with my husband and his family in a Riad (a traditional Moroccan house or palace with an internal garden or courtyard) in Bab El Khemis, a very traditional neighbourhood.

Papyrus plant, at the house’s courtyard. It’s the plant the Ancient Egyptians used to make their “paper”.

Planning our outing for the day.

There’s hundreds of decorated doors everywhere.

Texture has always caught my eye and there was loads to look at in Marrakech, marking the passage of time and its effects on our objects.

Come on in. Or maybe not.

In Morocco non-Muslims cannot visit the mosques. Funnily enough, this is a rule that was implemented by the French, when the ruled the country.

What I wore on Christmas day: Coat – H&M (via Ebay), Shoes – Carvela, via TK Maxx, Dress– Mod Dolly (get it here, it’s handmade in London), Headband – H&M

A lot of people decorate their vehicles, which I found extremely interesting.

So these are only a few photos I have taken while out and about. I’ll be posting more as we go along…

A little bit of history

December 16, 2013

One of the great things about buying antique and vintage clothes is to imagine the history behind the pieces. Unless we have something that belonged to a family member, sometimes it is difficult to know where it came from or who owned it. When I get that rare glimpse of it, it is a fantastic feeling. I ordered this beautiful 2nd World War American nurse cape off Ebay. I was extremely surprised when the receipt printout came with a handwritten note, that I felt was imbued with love. It reads:

“Sara,

Do hope you will enjoy my Great Aunt Maude’s cape. She was a fine lady and very dedicated to her profession.

Regards, Roberta”

That got me imagining what Maude looked like. How did she dress? What did she see during the war? If only our clothes could talk. All I can do is cherish it and wear it to my heart’s content.

Details: Cape – Vintage American Nurse cape from Ebay, Dress – 70’s vintage, from Vintage Basement in London, Boots – Rocket Dog (via TK Maxx), Cardigan – H&M, Peace Belt – Primark, Head Scarf– Moschino (via TK Maxx).

I’m joining Patti’s Visible Monday, as it has become a habit.

Memories of Brooklyn

December 6, 2013

I may have mentioned this before (I am pretty sure I did, but one of my favourite things to do when I travel is to go shopping. Not only because I like seeing things I can’t find where I live but also because when I wear them back home it always reminds me of the good times that were had.

As I wore the bunny jumper seemed like the perfect excuse to share these photos of Brooklyn, as they have until now remained hidden on my hard drive. I took them last year, a day before hurricane Sandy hit the city. I bought that jumper on that weekend, when Mr D and I went shopping together in the Soho area.

See, I cannot resist a cute bunny wabbit.

Nor an owl…

… or a (big) cat.

Here is the outfit that sparked this trip down memory lane: Coat – H&M (via Ebay), Jumper – Forever 21, Leopard skirt – Ebay, Shirt – Ben Sherman (thrifted, also worn here) Shoes – Seaside (discount shoe store in Portugal), Black Scarf – Oscar (Oscar de la Renta, via TK Maxx), Leopard Head Scarf – Flea Market in Lisbon

The last two photos were taken by Filipa, on our lunch break.

Tomorrow I am going down to ASOS in London for the Social Media School event. I’ll be posting about it as well as a new post for the Tattoo Files feature and my very own Christmas shopping guide! Stay tuned and have a lovely weekend!
