Tech disasters… or how to avoid them.

May 10, 2013

I was thinking about what I would do if my computer died… Panic! You see, lately it’s been heating up and it crashes as a consequence – it would appear that the fan might need a little cleaning. This of course worries me as I do not want it to suffer irreparable damage. I use it for everything: talking to my husband and family on Skype, keeping connected to my friends on Facebook, it’s a life line. I use it to write the blog posts you normally read, edit the photos that go along with them and read everyone else’s – a connection to the world. On top of that it’s what I use to listen to music and watch the films or series that rock me to sleep every night. An inseparable companion isn’t it?

That got me thinking about what I could do to keep my best friend working well and steps to salvage data, in case it fails. First of all the basic protection would be to have a firewall and anti virus protection (like Norton, for example). Then the most important thing is backing up data.  I have a couple of external hard drives where I store my music, films and photos – I have too many gigabytes of information that I don’t want to lose on a computer meltdown! You can also use a cloud service to backup the most important things, like your photos (external hard drives can fail too). There is a decent article about that from PC World here. As far as backup goes, I would also recommend you get a backup service for your blog – remember my nightmare back in March? It as lucky that my friend Sandrine had  all the subscription emails in her inbox, but we can’t rely on luck if we are doing things properly. In my case, Jorge, who designed the blog and put it all together, used a backup plugin for WordPress, that sends my info to my Google Drive.

So that’s it, this is what I do to keep my computer and data safe. Do you have any other suggestions?

In case you got bored with all the tech talk, here’s something I wore a while ago:

Details: Coat – TK Maxx, Beret – Present from Oh La Lali, Bag – Maison Margiella for H&M, Tights – Retail, Shoes – H&M, via Ebay

Bow Dress– Blanco (swap with my friend Lili),  Cowboy Boots Shirt – Luella for Target, thrifted in Florida.

I put my right foot in, I put my right foot out, In out, in out. shake it all about.

I’m writing this from my bed as I am still recovering from this week’s surgery. I’ve been getting better by the day and Saturday marks the day of my first post op shower yay! I get to shower and change the dressings for the first time today, I’ll feel like an entirely new person after that. Sunday at the farm

April 29, 2013

Last Sunday I stopped by the place where my housemate and friend Iain keeps his horse, on the way to Lincoln for a movie session. (We saw The Place Beyond the Pines, which I highly recommend. It’s not only very a very good story and performances but also the main actors are Ryan Gosling and Bradley Cooper, need I say more?). Anyways, I had to keep myself busy while the horse was being tended to and I went around chasing after the animals and taking photos.

I thought Amber would like this photo of some English chicks when I took it.

This little guy trotted towards me at some point, I don’t know what he was thinking as he never got close enough to get some cuddles…

Lovely yellow daffodils are everywhere.

Although it seems like I’m speaking to him, sadly Wolfie is not a talking horse. Details: Jacket – Antoni and Alison (via TK Maxx, worn previously here), Jumper – Ebay, altered by me, Skirt – Ebay, Shorts – H&M , Black flower – H&M, Jazz Dance boots – Ebay (they’re starting to fall apart, boo)

I’m adding this to Patti’s Visible Monday as wearing a fur coat and white boots around the stables makes you stick out like a sore thumb.

Office looks

April 27, 2013

As posting outfit photos hastily taken at the office parking lot is somehow becoming a bit of a habit, I thought I’d inaugurate a new Saturday feature called ‘Office Looks’, in which I share my totally inappropriate looks for the office. Like I said last week, I dread the day I will have to tone down my outfit silliness for the sake of work. For now and while I can, I’ll make the most of it.

As the weather is finally getting nicer, I thought I’d share the last of the Winter looks I have shot by Frankie, my lunchtime photographer so next week I can move on to nicer weather gear. The common theme with this one is obviously the jacket. It is grey as the weather and I like it a lot,  I’ve been wearing it quite often.

Details: Jacket – Zara (trade with Lili), Jumper – Gharani Strok (via TK Maxx), Skirt – H&M Trend (via Ebay), Boots – Office (via Ebay), Bag – Target (from my latest trip to Florida), Beret – It belonged to my Mum in the 80’s.

The boots are really high and I can’t walk all that well in them – although they are marked my size, they are a tad too big. Sadly, I may have to let them go because of this. If you wear a UK size 6 and are interested let me know as they might fit you properly. I think Vix has similar ones in grey. (Oh, and they are black, although they look midnight bluey on the photo – I wish!)

Details – Jacket – Zara (trade with Lili), Dress – H&M Trend (via Ebay), Bag – Target, Tights – Primark, Boots – Irregular Choice (via Ebay), Scarf – Vintage Souvenir from Rome scarf,(thrifted in Florida)

How crazy are these? One of the silliest pair of shoes I own. And you know I own quite a few…

Anyway, I hope you like this new feature. Which outfit is your favourite?

Week in Photos

April 21, 2013

What a busy week this has been! Friends from the Lisbon office were visiting and we went out for meals a few times. Thursday as I mentioned yesterday, I went to the Company Magazine Fashion Forum in Manchester and that was a long stretch but it was worth it!

The Carnaby Irregular Choice fringe boots. They’re amazing.

Dress by Suncoo and my old leopard jacket from Bershka. Shoes by Kurt Geiger, via TK Maxx. Hurry, you can get them here!

Lovely leopard cape c/o Mod Dolly and black and green Irregular Choice shoes!

A photo from the road trip to Manchester last Thursday, some of the attendees at the Fashion Forum.

Pop stars where they belong lol. The day before M Thatcher’s funeral (she was from here).

Last Sunday I finally finished the black angora bejeweled top. As there was a little bit of rain I wore my see through rain boots! They look like DR Martens but made of see through plastic!

Don’t forget to follow me on Instagram under the handle @hellothemushroom.

Hope you are having a nice quiet Sunday 🙂
